In September 2012, the State Council formally approved the "Guangzhou Nansha New Area Development Plan". Guangzhou Nansha New Area is another important national-level new area established by the state in economically developed areas after Shanghai Pudong New Area and Tianjin Binhai District. It is 38 nautical miles away from Hong Kong and 41 nautical miles away from Macau. It is in a supporting position in the A-shaped structure of Guangzhou, Hong Kong and Macau. The Pearl River Delta urban agglomeration with Nansha New District as its geographic and geometric center has become the world's manufacturing center and one of the fastest growing economic regions.

Today Nansha has become a prosperous coastal fashion capital, with lush boulevards, international top-certified Nansha Yacht Club, five-star hotels and serviced apartments, as well as many well-known universities, golf courses and the bustling Pearl River Delta World Trade Center Building. In addition to traditional attractions such as Tianhou Temple, Nansha also has an information technology park that is at the cutting edge of the times, as well as a high-speed ferry terminal to and from Hong Kong and Macau.
